Man seen climbing electricity mast in Lagos

An unidentified man in his late thirties was spotted at Powerline Street, Calvary Bus Stop in Egbe-Idimu Local Council Development Area climbing a high-tension tower.
According to Punch, the man wandered around the vicinity in the early hours of the day before stopping at the foot of the tower at about 2pm.

Residents and eyewitness were left in total shock seeing that the man was climbing the electricity mast like he was on a suicide mission.
Fortunately, as at the time the man got on the tower there was no electricity in the wires, it would have been another day of tragedy.
“ He was not mad at all. He was coherent when he talked except for some vague statements he made. He had a mission and it was to kill himself for some unknown reasons.” Says Mr. Kazeem Oyebola a resident.
The incident attracted a large crowd and some of the witness had to climb the tower to see if they could get him down.
It was also gathered that it took about three hour to get the man down the mast after the community leader contacted police at the Idimu police station.
However, it is still unclear what could have made the man climb a high-tension tower, witnesses said he didn’t look mentally challenged, and he was lucky to have survived electrocution.

In Anambra;Hostel fire displaces 80 students

No fewer than 80 students have been displaced from their boarding house accommodation at the Don Bosco Secondary School and Youth Centre, Obolo Obosi, near Onitsha following a fire incident.
The Rector of the school, Rev. Fr. Charles Uzoeto , who conducted journalists around the charred remains of the hostel on Sunday, said the fire broke out while the students and teachers were in school.
Uzoeto said the students had been sent back to their parents following an agreement between the management of the school and parents as there was no place for them to stay.
The Rector said the property of the students could have been saved, but the fire service was unable to reach the school in good time due to the bad access road.
“It was a serious fire incident. Nobody can say exactly what happened or how it happened, but everyone was in school.
``We can only speculate about the real cause, but we thank God that no life was lost.
“About 80 students are housed in the two wings of the hostel; we cannot quantify the extent of damage as virtually everything the students had in the hostel was lost,” he said.
According to him, the bedding, the entire roof of the building and even the structure of the building were destroyed by the fire.
“The fire services would have reached here much earlier, but on their way, they discovered that they could not access the place because of bad road leading to this place.
``After meandering through the markets with all the difficulties, before they came here, we were already counting our losses.
“I think if the roads were good, they would have reached here much earlier.
``They made efforts as human beings but they could not jump, they could not fly, and that reduced the chances of rescue,” he said.
Uzoeto called on government, corporate organisations and kind individuals to come to the aid of the school to enable it to commence its normal academic activities.
“The assistance we need is obvious, it is a private mission school built with the best intention, but the resources are not there like before.
``We need help from government, organisations and individuals to recover from this colossal loss,” he said.
Don Bosco Secondary School, Obosi is an educational institute, managed by the Salesian Priests of the Catholic Church, and is one of the three in Nigeria.

So he probably allowed anger to take over him for a moment, and that moment was all over the world unfortunately, but I am sure it is not going to happen again. "

Miracle baby weighing just 2 pounds, suffered liver failure, collapsed lungs and still survived

A 16 year old teenage mum has thanked the dedicated staff at a Teesside hospital for saving the life of her baby son who was born weighing just two pounds. Delivered at 26 weeks tiny Levi-Haydon Smith suffered multiple complications, including kidney failure, two collapsed lungs, fluid on the lung and jaundice.
But after spending nearly eight weeks being cared for at Stockton’s University Hospital of North Tees, Levi-Haydon is now back home in the arms of relieved mum Carla.
Now Carla, 16, and the baby’s grandma Joy, want to express their gratitude to the Neonatal Intensive Care unit that was only last year threatened with closure.
NHS England argued that North Tees was too small to justify designation as an LNU (Local Neonatal Unit) and recommended in October its NIC beds be transferred to Middlesbrough’s James Cook University Hospital.
The move sparked an outcry from parents and staff and more than 7,000 people signed an online petition against the threatened closure.
Then in December NHS England reassured that the unit at North Tees will now not be “significantly downgraded”.
Carla told The Gazette today:
“If it wasn’t for North Tees neonatal unit then my Levi-Haydon would possibly not be here today.
“They take such great care in looking after all of the babies that they deal with each day, they don’t miss anything, they are all so friendly and professional.
“I could not thank them enough for everything that they have done for me and my son.”
Carla was transferred to North Tees from her home in Carlisle in a blue lit ambulance at just 26 weeks in November. Carlisle does not have an intensive care baby unit.
Levi-Haydon was born at 9.20pm on Sunday, November 15.
“He was absolutely tiny,” said Carla. “He’s really been through a lot. It was horrible. He’s had kidney failure, his left and right lung collapsed, he had fluid on his lungs and he’s also had jaundice. “But they have done so well at North Tees, the staff are amazing.”
After nearly two months in Stockton, little Levi-Haydon was transferred back to Carlisle’s special care baby unit, and last week was allowed to go home with his mum.
Carla said her son “is now doing great” - and he still only weighs 3lbs 5 ounces!
Said his gran Joy Smith:
“We can’t thank them enough at North Tees - both the delivery ward and Ward 23 intensive care ward.
“They have been amazing. We honestly can’t thank them enough.”
North Tees neonatal unit ward matron Debbie Bryan said:
“We’re delighted that thanks to the care Levi-Haydon had from staff in the unit he was able to go home with his family.”

COUPLE WHO LIVED AND SLEPT WITH ROTTING CORPSE

A couple in Girona, north-eastern Spain lived, ate and slept next to the rotting corpse of their seven-year-old son who suffered from asthma for two months because they refused to accept he was dead.
Bruce and Schrell Hopkins were arrested by the Catalan Mossos d’Esquadra after officers entered their rented home in Girona using a key given to them by the landlady.
The US consulate in Barcelona had been contacted by Mr Hopkins’ employers about an extended absence from work and had contacted police. The landlady was reportedly concerned that the family had not paid their rent for several months.
Police said they were struck by the mess on the ground floor and a stench coming from upstairs when they entered. When they went to investigate the smell, they found a spacious room with mattresses around a central bed. On the bed was a ‘lump curled up in a blanket’.
Police pulled the cover off to find the decomposing body of a child. Marks on the bed suggested someone had been sleeping next to the body.
“The parents of the youngster found dead in Girona have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter,” a spokesman for Mossos d’Esquadra said. “The investigation to clarify the circumstances of the youngster’s death remains open.”
Prosecutor Enrique Barata said the pair had “lost their sense of reality” after their son’s death.
“They would live normal home life around the dead body. They couldn’t accept that the child was dead.” Barata said.
The exact time and cause of the boy’s death will not be confirmed until the results of a postmortem are released but he was last seen alive on 15 November when he attended a family birthday.
The couple – originally from Detroit in the US – have been charged with negligent homicide after a judge heard they did not take their son to hospital because they do not believe in conventional medicine.
But Mr Salvador said Mr Hopkins had tried to resuscitate his son with cardiac massage and mouth to mouth breathing.
They could be released once the cause of death is determined if it can be proved the child was dead when they found him.
The couple’s other children – a boy and a girl aged 12 and 14 – have been taken into state care.

Pastor Ayo Rapheal, had been kidnapped during the Sunday service being held at the RCCG Resurrection Parish located at Kabba junction, Lokoja.

Punch Metro reports that the pastor, Mr Ayo Rapheal, had been kidnapped during the Sunday service being held at the RCCG Resurrection Parish located at Kabba junction, Lokoja.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that the kidnappers who were about 10 in number, had reportedly stormed the church at about 9am, ordering the congregation to lie face down on the ground.
One of the eyewitnesses had said:
“The pastor was dragged out of the church into the bush while the abductors shot sporadically into the air to facilitate their escape.”
There have been no reports of casualties, but some of the church members are reported to have sustained injuries in their bid to escape the church as the gunmen shot into the air.

Lagos Inspector Falls Off Speeding Commercial Bus, Dies

The police have arrested a 40-year-old driver, Moshood Ekunsumi, for allegedly killing a police inspector, Stephen Nzerem, on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway.

The suspect’s conductor, who is at large, has also been declared wanted by the Nigeria Police Force in connection with the death.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Ekunsumi, a father of three, plied the Airport Road area and had resumed duty on the fateful morning.
However, a police team was said to have flagged down the bus along the road, with the aim of going
on an operation with it.
The driver, who immediately sensed what they were up to, drove off.
But the deceased was said to have jumped onto the vehicle to apprehend the driver.
The driver was said to have taken the victim away and was speeding when another vehicle crossed his path and he stepped on the brake pedal.
It was learnt that although both the policeman and the conductor were flung off the bus as the brake was applied, only the inspector died.
His skull was said to have been smashed by an oncoming trailer and he died on the spot.
The driver and the conductor were said to have fled the scene and abandoned the bus.
The police, however, arrested the owner of the vehicle.
The matter was subsequently transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, from where investigations led to the arrest of Ekunsumi.
The bus owner, Otaru Joseph, said he had cautioned the driver over his conduct.
He said:
“But he did not listen to me. After the incident happened, I thought he would also call me to let me know what happened, but instead, he called and said my vehicle was involved in an accident and cut the call. He didn’t call again and he switched off his mobile phones. He fled to Ondo State where he thought nobody would get him.
I was the one that was first arrested and detained. I would have suffered and died over what I knew nothing about.”
Ekunsumi said his action was not intentional.
He said:
“I did not do it intentionally. It was not the first time that the police would hijack our vehicle for their operation.
“But that day, I did not know what happened to me. The policeman just clung to the vehicle and because I was on motion, I could not stop.
“I applied the brakes and he fell off the bus and died. I regret my action.”
The suspect, was, however, arraigned before an Ebute-Meta Magistrate’s Court on two counts of murder.
The charge read in part:
“That you, Moshood Ekunsumi, and one other at large, on August 26, 2015, at about 8.30am, at Jakande bus stop, on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully kill one Inspector Stephen Nzerem, aged 51, by pushing him out of a fast moving commercial bus.”
The police prosecutor, Cousin Adams, said the offence was punishable under sections 231, 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.
The defendant’s plea was not taken.
Cousin thereafter applied for the remand of the defendant in prison custody pending the release of legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
The defence counsel, however, objected the application, urging the court to conduct a preliminary enquiry.
The magistrate, Mrs. H.O. Omisore, called the Investigating Police Officer from the SDCI.
After listening to the IPO, the magistrate criticised the defendant for being reckless with his vehicle.
She also berated the police for wanting to forcefully take over the bus when the driver was not willing to release it.
She pointed out that what happened did not qualify for the murder charge brought by the police.
She, thereafter, adjourned the matter till Monday, January 18, 2016, for ruling.

11 yr old Girl Kidnapped by Herbalist Reunites with Parents after 5 Years (Photo)

Destiny was abducted in January 2011 at Okpekpe in the Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State by a herbalist, Emmanuel Akpan-Okon.
PUNCH Metro had reported on November 26, 2015, that Akpan-Okon also abducted one Esther Wisdom (11) from Onitsha in Anambra State and turned the kids into sex slaves.
The kids were rescued on November 16, 2015, in Akamkpa, Akamkpa Local Government Area of
Cross River State.
While handing over one of the rescued victims (Destiny) to her mother, Mrs. Felicia Pius, at the command headquarters in Calabar, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. John Eluu, said both victims were rescued in the house of Akpan-Okon.
He said:
“On November 16, 2015, a team of detectives attached to the Akamkpa Police Division, acting on a tip-off, arrested a herbalist, one Emmanuel Akpan-Okon, who specialised in removing bullets from firearms victims.
“Investigation revealed that the herbalist is also known for preparing charms for armed robbers and other miscreants in the area.
His house and premises were searched and two juveniles, Felicia Destiny (11) and Esther Augustine (11), both females, were rescued. Both victims were abducted five years ago from their homes and parents.”
He said the suspect had confessed to the crime, adding that he had fed the police with details on how the parents of the girls could be contacted.
“Investigation is still ongoing. The suspect will be arraigned as soon as investigation is completed. We will ensure that the suspect faces the wrath of the law,” Eluu said.
The PPRO said that the police would also ensure that Augustine was re-united with her family.
He appealed to members of the public with relevant information on the whereabouts of the parents of Esther to provide it.
He also advised parents to be cautious about the movement of their children, saying juveniles could easily be lured by hoodlums if not properly monitored.
Mother of Destiny, Felicia, who received her daughter with tears of joy, commended the police for rescuing her daughter from the hands of her captor five years after.
“I never believed I will see my daughter again. I almost died when she was kidnapped in 2011. I am very happy to see her again. I thank the Cross River Police Command for rescuing my daughter from the hands of her captor,” she said.
